Inverted T waves are not considered normal in a standard electrocardiogram (ECG) reading. However, it's important to note that the interpretation of T wave inversion can be complex and must be considered within the context of the patient's clinical presentation and other ECG findings. In some cases, inverted T waves can be seen in healthy individuals, particularly in leads V2 and V3 of the ECG in young individuals, which is often a normal variant. But in other leads or in the presence of other abnormalities, inverted T waves may indicate an underlying condition such as myocardial ischemia, electrolyte imbalances, or other cardiac issues.
The T wave is the most labile wave in the ECG. T wave changes including low-amplitude T waves and abnormally inverted T waves may be the result of many cardiac and non-cardiac conditions. The normal T wave is usually in the same direction as the QRS except in the right precordial leads (see V2 below).
