In baseball, a run batted in (RBI) is credited to a batter when the batter hits the ball and, due to that action, a run scores. An RBI can be credited on a fielder's choice if the batter reaches base safely and, as a direct result of that play, a run scores. It's important to note that the batter must reach base safely for an RBI to be awarded; if the batter is out but a run still scores due to a fielder's choice, the RBI is not credited to that batter.

Rule of thumb -- If the runner keeps running without stopping after the ball is hit, credit an RBI. If the runner stops at a base and takes off again after noticing the misplay, credit the run as scored on a fielder's choice.
