In baseball, a foul ball is not considered a strike unless it meets certain conditions. Specifically, a foul ball is considered a strike under two circumstances: if it is the third strike in an at-bat, or if the batter has already had two strikes before hitting the foul ball. If the batter has fewer than two strikes when they hit a foul ball, it does not count as a strike and the at-bat continues.

The foul strike rule is a rule adopted in the early 20th Century under which some foul balls are counted as strikes against the batter. Under the foul strike rule, a batter is charged with a strike when he swings and hits a foul ball unless he already has two strikes against him.
