As a food industry expert with a focus on product ingredients and dietary preferences, I can provide you with a detailed answer regarding the vegan status of Oreos in the United States.
Oreo cookies, which are produced by Nabisco, a subsidiary of Mondelez International, are not considered vegan. The primary reason for this is the presence of whey in the ingredient list. Whey is a by-product of the cheese-making process and is derived from milk, which is an animal product. Additionally, Oreos may contain other minor ingredients that are not vegan, such as honey or other animal-derived additives, although these are not always present and may vary by production batch.
It's important to note that the vegan status of a product can change over time or vary by country due to different formulations or regional availability of ingredients. Therefore, it's always a good idea for vegans to check the ingredient list on the packaging or contact the manufacturer directly for the most current and accurate information.

However since Spring 2013, the whey powder has been removed and UK Oreos are now suitable for vegetarians and vegans. In 2014 Oreos also became vegan in the US. According to the FAQ on Oreo UK siteThey are not vegan as they have the cross contact of Milk.
