The slowest seismic waves are the Surface waves. These waves travel along the Earth's surface and are slower than both P and S waves. Surface waves can be further divided into two types: Love waves and Rayleigh waves. Love waves move the ground from side to side in a horizontal motion, while Rayleigh waves cause both vertical and horizontal ground motion, resembling the motion of waves on a water surface. The speed of surface waves is slower because they are more affected by the properties of the Earth's crust and upper layers than the P and S waves, which travel through the interior of the Earth.
