An isovolumetric process, also known as a constant-volume process, is a thermodynamic process in which the volume of the system does not change. This means that no work is done by or on the system, as work is defined as the force applied to an object times the distance over which the force is applied. Since the volume remains constant in an isovolumetric process, there is no distance over which the force can act, and thus no work is done. During an isovolumetric process, the system can still exchange heat with its surroundings. If the system is a gas, the pressure and temperature can change, but the volume remains constant. This type of process is often used in the study of heat engines and in thermodynamic cycles, such as the one used in car engines during the compression and power strokes.
